I remember when I was a kid I steal a box of chalk to the church, I wanted to chalk because I liked scratch the walls of the church with my friends. We did this every Sunday, this was funny because the nuns didn't have chalk to gave class.Bat one day we think that the made was bad and and return all, and ask for apologize.
I think it was wrong what you did at the start, but the attitude you had at the end was the more correct you could have done.
